[PHF-1] 5 Modular Miniatures (2013) for sextet
Instrumentation details: flute (doubling piccolo), Clarinet (doubling bass clarinet), violin, cello, piano, percussion.
The piece is based on the study of various Cellular Automata models. Snapshots of the evolution of certain rules applied in different models were transcribed and manipulated, serving as the entire rhythmic material for this work. The pixelated, self-similar and often non-evolutionary characteristics are intrinsic features of these materials. A small collection of these images extracted are provided below, in order to demonstrate what was not only a literal, but also figurative reference of composition through dynamic processes.
Performers are encouraged to select a different order of movements for each performance; if not, the default sequence is A-B-C-D-E. The selection must follow some rules. These are presented below:
[A] must be the first or the fifth movement;
[B] should not be preceded or followed by [D];
[C] should not be the first movement;
[D] should not be preceded or followed by [B];
[E] should not be the first movement;
